City officials celebrated the completion of a $106 million renovation to the Cedar Rapids Convention Complex with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday. The complex unites three spaces, the U.S. Cellular Center Arena and Convention Center and the DoubleTree by Hilton Cedar Rapids Hotel. Led by OPN Architects the design team includes AECOM of Kansas City, MO and tvsdesign of Atlanta,GA. AECOM is a world leader in multipurpose arena design and tvsdesign has designed more conference and event centers than any other firm in the world.
The updated complex includes extensive renovations and new construction. It is the second largest convention and events complex in the state of Iowa — second only to Community Choice Credit Union at Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines. The Cedar Rapids Convention Complex includes a new exhibit hall, ballrooms, meeting rooms and pre-function space, plus a renovated events arena and renovated hotel with an additional ballroom and meeting room space. The 471,227 square foot complex offers 81,779 square feet of exhibit space, 12,359 square feet of ballroom space and 19,383 square feet of meeting room space.
