OPN principal Dan Thies presented his ideas to make Cedar Rapids a brighter, more vibrant city at IGNITE Cedar Rapids. Hosted by the Cedar Rapids Visual Arts Commission and the City of Cedar Rapids, the event invited eight presenters to share a “bright idea” to create visual art in the city. The intent was to generate ideas for public art that would improve the appearance and cultural climate or the community, making Cedar Rapids a more vibrant hometown.
Thies presented his idea “ACE DISTRICT – Third Street Urban Art” to a room of artists, designers and community members. The goal of Thies’ project is to unify and energize the emerging Arts, Culture and Entertainment District (ACE) with a series of vibrant street-level murals. Inspired by Peter Kageyama and his book For the Love of Cities, these murals would enliven the city’s urban core while visually drawing visitors down Third Street.
