Dan Thies has been named one of Cedar Rapids / Iowa City’s ‘Most Influential’ citizens. The designation is determined by an open online vote conducted by the Corridor Business Journal. Dan was voted third in a list of the top 30 most influential people in the Cedar Rapids.
Since 1985, Dan Thies has directed OPN Architects as a principal, and now president, of the firm. Dan’s commitment to clear strategic vision, open collaboration, and exemplary client service is the core of OPN’s practice. Dan’s portfolio reflects a diverse range of client and project types. He is widely regarded as a regional leader in the management of large, complex projects such as the United States Courthouse. In Cedar Rapids, construction is underway on the Cedar Rapids Convention Complex and Hilton Hotel; the 306,000 square foot complex is scheduled for completion in 2013. In Iowa City, Dan is working with world-renowned architect Cesar Pelli on the design of the new Hancher Performing Arts Center for the University of Iowa. This $180 million dollar project will create a state-of-the-art performance space and iconic structure on the university campus. Dan’s work also includes a number of significant corporate buildings including the 390,000 square foot John Deere Financial Worldwide Headquarters in Johnston, Iowa and the corporate offices for John Deere Healthcare in Moline, Illinois.
Locally, Dan is recognized for his commitment to professional excellence and civic leadership. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Architects Council and is a LEED Accredited Professional. Dan serves of the Board of Directors and as Board Chair of the Cedar Rapids Airport Commission, the Cedar Rapids Science Center, Young Parents Network and the United Way of East Central Iowa.
