Paramount Theater receives AIA Iowa Honor Award

The American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter (AIA Iowa) has recognized OPN Architects for the historic restoration of the Paramount Theatre in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

In June 2008, the once grand theater was severely damaged by a devastating flood that swept through Cedar Rapids. The flood damaged the historic elements of this 1928 building and many questioned whether the structure could be restored. OPN worked to restore the historic structure in a manner that honored the building’s rich history and cultural significance while creating a multipurpose venue suitable for symphony, theater, opera, organ recital, community productions, film, and community gatherings. Today the building is stands as a rich example of the timeless beauty of the original architecture. The Paramount has resumed its place as the center of cultural life in the community and is breathing new life into downtown Cedar Rapids.

The American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter (AIA Iowa), announced the recipients of the AIA Iowa Excellence in Design Awards during an Award Celebration held at the FFA Enrichment center in Ankeny. These awards recognize excellence in architecture and emphasize the importance of the profession in Iowa’s communities. The 2013 AIA Iowa Awards Celebration took place in conjunction with the AIA Iowa Annual Fall Convention held at the Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center in Des Moines. The 2013 Convention, “Feedback,” focused on sustainable architectural design, engineering and architecture integration, environmental and cultural influences and computer aided research in architecture.
