Intermec is a supply chain management company with more than 2,300 employees worldwide in more than 65 countries. For decades, their Cedar Rapids office was housed in a dark, largely windowless building on a nondescript corner in downtown Cedar Rapids. After a devastating flood swept through the building in 2008, executives questioned whether to move their operations out of the downtown core, renovate their existing space or build new. They decided to remain in the downtown but to build a new, modern facility.
OPN Architects worked with the company to design a new, state-of-the-art facility to house the firm’s research, engineering, and administrative functions. The Cedar Rapids Technology Center provides space for more than 230 employees to collaborate on the design, development, and testing of next-generation designs for mobile and data collection solutions.
The two-story, 81,000-square-foot structure hosts 31,000-square-feet of open office space; 12,000-square-feet of lab space; a 3,700-square-foot multi-purpose/cafe space; and a 2,300-square-foot loading dock and storage facility. The upper level houses workspaces, teaming rooms, an executive conference room, and a customer demonstration area.
Built along a busy central street, the building defines the urban edge with large expanses of glass. The windows wrap around the building, providing abundant natural light and connecting the internal activities of the building with the external activity of the city. Strong geometric forms and a sophisticated mix of exterior materials support the building’s high-tech identity and purpose.
